A mobile hoist, sling, traveller, carers and hotel room form one transfer system. Each part must be compatible. Ordering “a hoist” without discussing the transfer and environment can result in equipment that cannot pass around the bed, fit beneath it or safely support the user.
Guide topic: Equipment hire
Choose the correct equipment type
Common portable hoists use powered lifting with manually adjustable legs, although specifications vary. The spreader bar and sling attachment method must match the chosen sling. Measure the space required to approach the bed, chair and toilet, the turning area, doorway width and clearance beneath furniture. Ask whether the hotel bed can be moved or whether a profiling bed is also required.
Match the equipment to the traveller and accommodation
Give the provider an established moving-and-handling assessment wherever possible. State the user’s weight, body shape, head support, sitting balance and every planned transfer. Identify who will operate the hoist and confirm they are competent to use both the model and sling. Mobility Abroad cannot select clinical equipment for an individual user.
Information to confirm before booking
- Safe working load and lifting range
- Spreader-bar design and sling attachment type
- Correct assessed sling model and size
- Leg width, overall dimensions and turning space
- Under-bed and under-chair clearance
- Charging, emergency lowering and breakdown response
Delivery, handover and breakdown support
Arrange delivery before the equipment is first needed. Inspect labels, sling fabric, stitching, loops, castors, brakes, controls and emergency lowering. The provider should demonstrate assembly and operation in the actual room. Do not improvise with an incompatible sling or unapproved attachment loops.
Keep the written specification, price, deposit and cancellation terms together with delivery and emergency contact details. Reconfirm the address, room or apartment number and expected arrival time shortly before travel.
Common questions
Can I use my own sling with a hired hoist?
Possibly, but only when a competent person confirms that its condition, attachment system and safe working load are compatible with the exact hired hoist and spreader bar.
Why does under-bed clearance matter?
The hoist legs normally need to pass beneath or around the bed to position the spreader bar correctly. A solid divan base or low bed frame may prevent this even in a large room.
Will the hire company train hotel staff or carers?
Do not assume it will. Establish who will operate the equipment, what demonstration is provided and whether the operator already has appropriate moving-and-handling competence.
