Fuengirola is favourable—but not uniformly flat

The Paseo Marítimo Rey de España provides a long coastal route through central Fuengirola, Los Boliches and towards Carvajal. This is the feature that makes the town particularly attractive to many scooter and wheelchair users. Streets rise inland, however, and gradients become more noticeable around Torreblanca and some approaches towards Carvajal. At the western end, routes around the castle and river should also be checked rather than assumed.

Choose the accommodation around the traveller’s daily routine. Central Fuengirola and Los Boliches can place shops, restaurants, rail stations and the seafront relatively close together. A property advertised as “near the beach” may still be uphill, across a busy road or reached through a steep driveway. Trace the exact route in both directions and ask the hotel for a continuous video from pavement to room.

Which mobility scooter is suitable?

A small folding or dismantling scooter is easier to carry and may fit a compact lift, but smaller wheels, a lighter seat and reduced battery capacity can make long promenade days uncomfortable. A medium pavement scooter is often a useful compromise. A larger model may provide better range and comfort but needs more turning room, secure storage and a sufficiently large lift.

Give the provider the user’s weight, height, balance, transfer ability and intended mileage. Ask for the exact make or model, overall width and length, safe user-weight limit, charger type, ground clearance and realistic range. Heat, gradients, user weight, battery condition and repeated starts reduce the distance achieved in normal use. Plan a return journey with a substantial reserve.
