About Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria offers contrasting experiences: purpose-built southern resorts, the city of Las Palmas, sandy beaches and steep volcanic interior. The southern tourism areas have the strongest concentration of holiday services, but their terrain ranges from the broad Meloneras promenade to hotels built high above Puerto Rico.

Maspalomas is known for dunes and a lighthouse, Meloneras for waterfront hotels and dining, Playa del Inglés for entertainment, and Puerto Rico for a sheltered bay. Las Palmas adds museums, shopping and Las Canteras beach. Rural viewpoints and island tours need separate access planning.

Who might enjoy Gran Canaria

Meloneras can be convenient for promenade use, while Playa del Inglés rises inland and Puerto Rico’s valley sides require careful hotel selection. Heat, wind and sand affect outdoor mobility. Choose an area by daily routine before comparing accommodation.

Mobility Abroad perspective

A good holiday depends on the relationship between the traveller, the exact accommodation and the routes they intend to use. Our guidance avoids describing an entire destination as simply “accessible”.

Gran Canaria combines large southern resorts, a major capital and varied volcanic terrain.

Terrain and getting around

Maspalomas and Meloneras have broad resort routes, while Playa del Inglés rises inland and Puerto Rico is built around steep valley sides.

Accessibility is personal: distance, gradient, surface, heat and crowding affect travellers differently. Trace the complete route from the accommodation to the places that matter, including the return journey.

Choosing where to stay

Meloneras is useful for promenade access; Playa del Inglés has more entertainment; Puerto Rico demands especially careful hotel-location checking.

Ask for the narrowest doorway, lift dimensions, bathroom transfer space, bed height and a step-free route to every hotel facility that will be used. Obtain important commitments in writing.

Airport transfers and local transport

Nearest airport: Gran Canaria Airport. Southern resorts require a road transfer from the airport. Adapted vehicles should be booked with equipment dimensions and transfer needs.

Tell the transfer company whether the traveller can move into a vehicle seat or must remain in the wheelchair. Provide chair or scooter dimensions, combined weight, companion numbers and luggage details.

Mobility equipment hire

Mobility Abroad no longer accepts bookings or payments. We provide independent preparation information and links to selected providers so travellers can arrange equipment directly.

Confirm model, safe user weight, dimensions, charging, delivery, collection, damage cover and breakdown support. Match the equipment to the local terrain and the accommodation rather than selecting by price alone.

Practical local advice

Dune, beach and excursion access varies by route and season, so verify boardwalks, accessible toilets and assistance directly.

Before booking Gran Canaria

  • Check the exact hotel street and surrounding gradients.
