Murcia’s Costa Cálida stretches around the Mar Menor and south-west Mediterranean coast. It includes historic Cartagena, lagoon resorts, long seasonal strips and traditional towns. The area can suit warm-weather breaks, but public transport and specialist equipment coverage differ from the largest package resorts.
Which part should you choose?
Cartagena provides Roman history, museums and a harbour setting. La Manga is a very long strip between two seas; Los Alcázares and Santiago de la Ribera face the Mar Menor; San Pedro del Pinatar combines town facilities with salt-lagoon landscapes. Puerto de Mazarrón and Águilas serve the more rugged south-west coast.
Terrain and realistic accessibility
Mar Menor promenades can be useful for level outings, but paving continuity, beach boardwalks and seasonal services vary. La Manga’s unusual length makes distance a defining issue. Cartagena’s central routes are different from its archaeological sites, and outer coves should not be assumed accessible.
No coast or town is universally accessible. Check the continuous route needed by the individual traveller, including crossings, gradients, surfaces, shade and accessible toilets.
Accommodation planning
Place everyday facilities within a verified route rather than relying on a resort label. In La Manga, record the kilometre marker and side of the strip. Elsewhere, check development gradients, reception arrangements, bathroom measurements and the permitted charging location.
Airports and accessible transfers
Región de Murcia Airport is closest to much of the Costa Cálida, while Alicante offers a wider range of flights. Confirm which airport the booking actually uses. Accessible taxis and transfer vehicles should be reserved early, particularly outside the principal summer period.
Mobility scooter and wheelchair hire
Ask the supplier to confirm delivery and breakdown coverage in writing. A provider in the Mar Menor may not offer an equivalent service in Águilas or Mazarrón. Model range, storage, heat and the return distance along exposed promenades all need conservative planning.
Use the individual resort guides
The guides below separate towns and resort districts that are often grouped together in brochures. Each covers local terrain, accommodation questions, transport and equipment delivery.
