Mobility Abroad guide

Checking a step-free holiday apartment

Check the complete entrance route, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and key collection before booking an apartment or holiday home.

Accessible holiday planning and mobility equipment

A holiday apartment can give you more control over meals, rest and daily routines. The useful question is whether the exact property works for you from arrival through the last morning.

Ask about the entire route

Start at the place where your transfer vehicle can stop. Ask for a continuous video through the gate, building entrance and lift to the apartment door. Request measurements of the narrowest clear opening with the door fully open. Include tight turns immediately after doors; a chair that fits through an opening may still be unable to turn into the corridor.

Confirm where you will sleep and wash

Ask for photographs of both sides of the bed and the approach to the bathroom. Send the dimensions of the equipment you intend to use. For a shower chair, check the shower entrance, turning space and position of fixed screens. If you need a hoist, refer the room and bed measurements to the equipment provider rather than asking a host to make a clinical judgement. Read our mobile-hoist planning guide.

Check the practical parts of self-catering

  • Can you reach the fridge, sink and cooking controls you need?
  • Is there space to sit at the table without moving heavy furniture?
  • Can a delivery reach the apartment door?
  • Where may powered equipment be stored and charged?
  • Can you use the balcony without negotiating a raised track?

Resolve the handover before paying

A key safe high on a wall, a heavy gate or an upstairs reception can defeat an otherwise suitable property. Agree an alternative if needed and keep the host’s response with the reservation. Request confirmation that the photographs relate to the exact unit, since several apartments in one building may have different bathrooms. Check cancellation terms while any essential question remains unanswered.

Choose the location in our destination guides, then use its local hotel and apartment links. A search result is the start of an enquiry, not proof of access.
