Mobility Abroad guide

Hotel or self-catering with mobility equipment?

Compare the complete holiday routine, support and transport costs when choosing between a hotel and a self-catering property.

Accessible holiday planning and mobility equipment

The right choice depends on how you want to spend the day and which arrangements you need confirmed. Compare the whole stay rather than the nightly rate alone.

When a hotel may simplify the routine

A hotel can bring meals, reception and shared facilities together. Check that those facilities are reachable from your reserved room and available at the times you need them. An accessible bedroom on a separate level is less useful if breakfast requires a staff-operated lift or a long outdoor detour. Ask whether reception can receive hired equipment and who will resolve a late arrival.

What an apartment can offer

An apartment may give companions separate space and let you choose meal times. Establish whether the kitchen is usable by the people who will prepare food, and whether groceries can be delivered. Self-catering does not have to mean doing everything yourself, but the arrangements need to be real. Check the host’s support hours and who attends if the lift or entry system fails.

Compare like for like

Make a small comparison with four headings: accommodation, food, transport and equipment. Include the transfers needed for meals or shopping, equipment delivery charges and any extra night caused by flight times. An apartment farther from the waterfront may cost less while making a vehicle necessary each day. A hotel’s meal plan may be good value only if its dining room and timetable suit you.

Decide using essential requirements

List the requirements without which the stay will not work: entrance route, bathroom layout, bed approach, charging and reliable arrival arrangements. Resolve these before comparing optional extras such as a view or pool. Keep a written response against each requirement. If two options both meet them, the better choice is the one that supports the routine you want with fewer unconfirmed steps.
