Planning the resort, accommodation and mobility equipment together creates a more independent holiday.

A city base with an Atlantic setting

Funchal is a useful starting point for an accessible Madeira holiday because it allows a city stay to be combined with selected coastal outings. The western seaside promenade is a notable feature. Madeira’s tourism board describes a route passing the Marine Biology Station and Ponta Gorda towards Ponta da Cruz. That description identifies places to research; it does not establish that the complete route will suit every chair or scooter.

Choose your daily area deliberately

Compare the city-centre routine you want with a stay around the Lido area. Ask about the actual route from the accommodation entrance to restaurants, shops and your preferred waterfront section. A hotel overlooking the sea may involve a gradient before reaching it. Check whether internal lifts connect to the entrance you will use, and whether that entrance is available whenever you return.

Check a promenade section, not just its name

Tell the tourist office or hotel the start and end points of your intended outing. Ask about steps, steep sections, surface changes and any works. Do not assume that a tunnel or connection shown on a tourist map is a suitable continuation. Begin with an out-and-back route whose return you have already assessed, with a rest stop and toilet that match your needs.

Plan city outings and island tours separately

For museums, gardens or viewpoints, obtain the individual venue’s current access information. For a tour, ask what can be enjoyed from the vehicle and what requires leaving it. Confirm airport arrival and equipment delivery to the same entrance, especially if the hotel has several levels. Self-catering visitors should check the route for groceries and the kitchen layout, while hotel visitors should confirm that breakfast and dining facilities are reachable from the reserved room.

Put the plans together

Use our holiday-apartment checks and flight and transfer planning guide before paying. If you need hired equipment, agree the model, delivery address and replacement arrangements directly with the supplier.
