Choose the resort before the island-wide search

Fuerteventura is a beach-focused Canary Island destination with a landscape very different from a compact Mediterranean town. Its open sandy areas are part of the attraction, but a photograph of a broad beach should not be interpreted as a route for ordinary mobility equipment. Begin with a resort and accommodation that support your everyday routine, then plan excursions separately.

Corralejo and the north

Corralejo provides a useful starting point for researching a northern stay. The nearby natural park combines extensive dunes with volcanic scenery. The tourism board describes contrasting sandy and volcanic areas: these are landscapes to plan around, not evidence that a wheelchair can cross them. Ask about the exact viewing point or beach entrance you want to use, and how close a suitable vehicle can drop you.

Wind, sand and equipment choices

Exposed coastal routes need practical preparation. Ask the hire company about the model’s suitability for the intended surfaces, and keep to routes approved for that equipment. Sand can make a route difficult and affect moving parts. Avoid assuming a larger scooter is a beach vehicle. Plan charging around actual daily use, with a reserve for detours and the return journey to the property.

Accommodation and transport are one decision

Compare a hotel’s internal routes with those outside its gates. A resort hotel may work well if most activities are on site; an apartment requires a workable route to groceries and meals. Confirm equipment delivery coverage and the response if it breaks down away from the supplier’s base. When arranging the airport transfer, state whether you remain in your wheelchair, the equipment dimensions and the luggage count. Use the Corralejo guide for a more focused northern resort plan.

Put the plans together

Use our holiday-apartment checks and flight and transfer planning guide before paying. If you need hired equipment, agree the model, delivery address and replacement arrangements directly with the supplier.
