About Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol stretches along Málaga province and combines a major historic city with traditional fishing districts, purpose-built resorts, marinas and quieter residential coast. Its familiar holiday infrastructure, extensive restaurant choice and long season make it an easy region in which to organise a first accessible trip, but the individual resorts are not interchangeable.
Visitors can combine relaxed days beside the Mediterranean with Málaga’s museums and waterfront, Benalmádena’s marina, Fuengirola’s long promenade, Marbella’s old town and Puerto Banús, or Nerja’s viewpoints and coves. Markets, chiringuito beach restaurants and evening paseo culture provide plenty to enjoy without arranging a formal excursion every day.
Who might enjoy Costa del Sol
Choose the town before the hotel. Fuengirola and coastal Benalmádena can suit travellers wanting amenities close together; Marbella offers a more polished break; Málaga works well for a city stay; Nerja and many inland urbanisations require more planning for hills. Spring and autumn are often more comfortable than the hottest summer weeks for longer wheelchair or scooter journeys.
A good holiday depends on the relationship between the traveller, the exact accommodation and the routes they intend to use. Our guidance avoids describing an entire destination as simply “accessible”.
The Costa del Sol has decades of experience serving international visitors and remains one of the strongest starting points for accessible holidays in southern Spain.
Terrain and getting around
The seafront areas of the main resorts are generally easier than the roads running inland. Gradients, dropped kerbs and pavement widths change from one municipality and neighbourhood to another.
Accessibility is personal: distance, gradient, surface, heat and crowding affect travellers differently. Trace the complete route from the accommodation to the places that matter, including the return journey.
Choosing where to stay
Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas Costa, Marbella and Nerja offer very different terrain. Choose the individual resort before choosing a hotel.
Ask for the narrowest doorway, lift dimensions, bathroom transfer space, bed height and a step-free route to every hotel facility that will be used. Obtain important commitments in writing.
Airport transfers and local transport
Nearest airport: Málaga Airport. The coastal railway is useful between Málaga, the airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola, but step-free access and lift availability should be checked for the stations needed.
Tell the transfer company whether the traveller can move into a vehicle seat or must remain in the wheelchair. Provide chair or scooter dimensions, combined weight, companion numbers and luggage details.
Mobility equipment hire
Mobility Abroad provides independent, practical guidance and links to selected local providers, helping travellers arrange suitable equipment with confidence. Hire and payment are completed directly with the chosen provider.
Confirm model, safe user weight, dimensions, charging, delivery, collection, damage cover and breakdown support. Match the equipment to the local terrain and the accommodation rather than selecting by price alone.
Practical local advice
Compare the exact hotel street, route to the promenade and airport-transfer vehicle rather than treating the whole coast as equally accessible.
